Located about 35 km southeast from Siem Reap, Kampong Khleang is a fantastic site for a visit at any time of the year; however, it depends on the lake levels which vary from year to year. This floating community is known as the largest as houses here are raised up to 10 meters and the population is 10 times that of Kampong Phluk.
The initial impression when getting to the village is that almost all of the houses are built on stilts and some standing up to 10 meters in height. It is an occasion to indulge yourself with the scenery and cool breezes and take a break from touring Cambodia’s many temples. You may visit the village’s floating school where you can join in handing out school supplies to the teachers and students. Next, reach to Phsaa Thnal Jaek where you can see piles of fresh vegetables, local breakfast restaurants, tasty snacks and an extensive source of fish still alive, freshly caught and salted and sun-dried all from the nearby lake. At a local restaurant in Kompong Khleang you may enjoy a lunch and drinks and have time to relax while immersing in the peaceful untamed environment.
The Cambodia tour will be not complete unless you traverse through the flooded forest. From there you will travel out into the floating village. It provides you with an exclusive chance opportunity to admire how abundant the native bird life is here. Especially, you are able to gain unique insight into real Cambodian village life as you witness local markets and locals doing myriad trades, which reflect traditional lifestyle in rural Cambodia.
